Gmail is the world’s most popular and widely used free email service. It allows you to install and configure your Gmail account in Outlook.


Gmail supports two POP and IMAP mail servers, which allow you to configure your Gmail in MS Outlook. IMAP is preferred when you want to access your email from multiple devices, such as your computer, smartphone, iPad, tablet, etc.

POP is preferred when you want to access your email from one device, for example from your computer or smartphone. In general, POP is considered better and more secure than IMAP, so it is better to use POP.

Step 1: Enable POP3 On Gmail Account

  • Before setting up Gmail in Outlook, you need to enable POP in your Gmail account.
  • Log in to your Gmail account.
  • Click Settings in the top right corner.

  • Click on “Forwarding and POP/IMAP”.
  • In the “Download POP:” section, click the first option “Enable POP for all email”.
  • You can see the green status that “POP is enabled”.
  • Click on “Save changes” at the bottom.

Step 2: Setup Gmail On Outlook

There are two options to set up Gmail in Outlook:

  1. Email account
  2. Manually configure server settings or additional server types

Option 1 is simple and straightforward, while option 2 requires a few variables to configure. Choose option 2 only if option 1 does not work.

1. Email Account

  • Click File.
  • Click Information.
  • Click Add Account.

  • Choose Email Account.
  • Enter your name.
  • Enter your email address (Gmail).
  • Enter your Gmail password.
  • Click next.

  • You will see “Configure Email Server Settings”. It takes a few seconds or minutes.

  • If you don’t find any errors, your Gmail is set up correctly in Outlook
  • Now you can use Outlook for your Gmail. Upload your Gmail emails here.

2. Manually Configure Server Settings Or Additional Server Types

  • Click File.
  • Click Information.
  • Click Add Account.

  • Choose ‘Manually configure server settings or additional server types’.
  • Click next.

  • Choose “Internet Email”.
  • Click next.

  • Enter your name.
  • Enter your email address that you want to configure.
  • Under “Account Type” choose POP3.
  • Type under “Incoming Mail Server.”
  • In “Outgoing Mail Server (SMTP)” type
  • Enter your Gmail address under “Username”.
  • Enter the password for your Gmail address.
  • Check the “Remember password” box.
  • Click on “More settings”.

  • Click on the “Outgoing Server” tab.
  • Check “My outgoing server (SMTP) requires authentication”.
  • Choose “Use the same settings as my incoming mail server”.

  • Click on the “Advanced” tab.
  • Under “Incoming Server (POP3)” “enter 995.
  • Check “This server requires an encrypted connection (SSL)”.
  • In “Outgoing Server (SMTP)” enter 587.
  • Under “Use the following type of encrypted connection”, choose TLS.
  • Click OK.

  • Now click on “Next”.

  • If configured, you will receive the congratulatory message.
  • A test email will also be sent to your email address.
  • Click Close.

  • Click Finish.

  • That’s all. You have successfully configured Gmail in Outlook.
